The History

Overlooking the dreamy seaside town of St. Ives with breathtaking views of some of Cornwall’s finest beaches that greet its famous coastline is Tregenna Castle – a wealth of history constantly in the making.

Its native name alone holds a special meaning of “the dwelling at the entrance” that originates from an Irish maiden who once crossed the ocean to reach this enchanted land. The name itself comes from the hill in which it resides, and from years ago was most likely chosen for its suitable prominence to keep watch for marauders.

In 1774, Samuel Stephens, Esquire of St Ives built Tregenna Castle as his home with architect John Wood of Bath, and master builder Daniel Freeman of Penryn. Built using local granite, it originally only had twelve bedrooms, whereby a further ten were added in 1844 to create the magnificent mansion it is today. It remained in the Stephens family until 1888, whereby it was sold and a new chapter in history began. Rented by Great Western Railway, Tregenna Castle became a hotel for the first time for visitors travelling on the main line from St. Erth to S. Ives. Today, the hotel still bestows many of its original features, alongside the transformations that have seen it become one of Cornwall’s most treasured hotels with wonderful panoramic views overlooking its famous coastline.
